The Ultimate Guide to Guitar Lessons in Lichfield: Everything You Need to Succeed

Thinking about guitar lessons in Lichfield for yourself or your child? Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or returning after a break, having a friendly teacher beside you can make those first steps feel much easier.

At DeRosa Music Lichfield, we offer one-to-one guitar tuition for all ages and skill levels. Lessons are £22.50 for 30 minutes each week, with the choice of learning face-to-face in our teaching space or online. We’ll help you build skills at a pace that suits you, with music and goals that feel personal.

Start where you are

You don’t need previous experience to begin. Beginners can start with the essentials: how to hold the guitar comfortably, tune it, find notes and make a clear sound. From there, you can work on simple chords, rhythm, melodies and songs.

If you’ve played before, you don’t have to start from scratch. Perhaps you remember a few chords, but your playing feels rusty. Or maybe you want to develop your technique and learn music that you’ve always wanted to play. We can tailor lessons to your experience and what you’d like to achieve.

What happens in a guitar lesson?

Lessons are one-to-one, so your tutor can focus on your questions, interests and progress. A lesson might include a warm-up, a new technique, practising a piece, rhythm or music-reading work, and a clear idea of what to try before next time.

There’s room for different aims, too. You might want to play songs for fun, understand more about how music works, or prepare for a performance. We can help you work towards optional graded exams, including ABRSM or Trinity, if that’s something you’re interested in. Students are also invited to take part in end-of-term performances for family and friends.

Our tutors bring more than four decades of music industry and academic knowledge. Lead tutor Bren and the team aim to make lessons supportive and encouraging, while helping you develop solid musical foundations.

Guitar lessons for children

A positive first experience can help children feel comfortable trying something new. In lessons, we build skills step by step, with attention to technique, rhythm and music that keeps learning enjoyable.

There’s no need to expect a child to master everything straight away. Small achievements matter: changing between two chords, keeping a steady beat or playing a short section of a favourite tune. With regular encouragement and practice, these building blocks can add up.

Parents can ask us about lesson arrangements and what to expect. Our timetable is organised in line with school terms, which can make it easier to plan lessons around the school year.

It’s never too late to learn

Adults come to guitar for all sorts of reasons. You might have always wanted to play, be looking for a new creative hobby, or want to reconnect with music after years away. You might also be learning simply because you enjoy listening to guitar and want to try it for yourself.

There’s no “right age” to begin, and you don’t have to arrive with a plan. Tell us what kind of music you enjoy and what you hope to get from lessons. We’ll help you find a comfortable starting point and build from there.

Choosing your first guitar

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the choice of guitars, especially when you’re new to the instrument. The right one should feel comfortable to hold and suit the kind of music you’d like to play. Acoustic, electric and classical guitars each have a different feel and sound, so it’s worth asking questions before you buy.

You don’t need to spend a lot to get started, but a guitar that’s uncomfortable or difficult to play can make learning harder than it needs to be. We offer expert advice on selecting the right instrument, so you can talk through the options with us before making a decision.

Making progress between lessons

Your weekly lesson gives you direction, but small, regular practice sessions at home help you use what you’ve learned. You don’t need to practise for hours. Even a short session can be useful if you focus on one or two things from your lesson.

Try this simple routine:

  1. Get comfortable and tune up. Take a moment to sit or stand comfortably and check your guitar is in tune.
  2. Warm up. Play a few notes or an exercise your tutor has suggested.
  3. Focus on one skill. Practise a chord change, rhythm pattern or short section of a piece.
  4. Slow it down. If something feels tricky, play it slowly and aim for clear, relaxed movements.
  5. Finish with something you enjoy. Playing a favourite piece or revisiting a song can make practice feel rewarding.

If you’re unsure what to practise, ask your tutor. A clear, manageable goal is often more helpful than trying to work on everything at once.
